It seems like before Halloween was even over, stores all over the United States started setting their sights on Black Friday sales and holiday shopping lists. The sense of Thanksgiving has started to fade in recent years as some people even skip Thanksgiving all together to wait for the latest deals. What most probably don’t realize is that taking the time to show your gratitude may benefit your health.

Do You Have an Attitude of Gratitude?

Over the last several years, studies have found that practicing gratitude throughout the year benefits your mental, emotional, and physical health as well as the health of your relationships. This is in part because people who are grateful are more likely to prioritize their own health and have the ability to empathize more with the people around them. Gratitude can also help reduce stress and depression while increasing happiness. Not only will having an attitude of gratitude improve yourself, but it will also improve your practice as the relationships around you become stronger.

How to Practice Gratitude

In today’s world, it can be difficult to have an attitude of gratitude. We are constantly seeing the latest terrible thing that happened in the news or negative drama is going viral from the latest reality TV show. That sort of behavior is easy to sell, making it all the more prevalent in society. It’s also easy to focus on the negative, which is why complaining is easier to do in day-to-day life than it is to take the time to be grateful for all the great things that have happened.

To increase the level of gratitude in your life, you have to practice gratitude. Start a gratitude journal and list a few things you are thankful for each day. It could be something as simple as someone holding the door open for you when your hands were full or as big as being grateful for the opportunity to practice chiropractic. No matter how big or small, you can find something to be grateful for each day. Practicing gratitude might seem difficult at first, but before you know it, you will be relishing in all that you are grateful for each day. As with most skills, it is a matter of practice to achieving that positive mind space.

This Thanksgiving when you are sitting around the table enjoying food, friends, and family be sure to take the time to be thankful for all that you’ve experienced and the many more wonderful opportunities that are in store. The year may be winding down, but an attitude of gratitude is one to practice for years to come.
